Introduction to the Vision Wall

What we focus on we tend to get more of; when we are aware of something, we notice it more easily and readily. The purpose of this section if to help you to focus on areas of your life that are important to you and that you want to improve or stay aware of.

We each have a number of roles that we fulfil, or aspire to fulfil, as we go through life, be that as a parent, son/daughter, business leader, team captain or mentor. When thinking about the roles you have it is important that you consider all areas of your life. You may find it useful to complete the Wheel of Life before you do this. If you are not sure how to do this, you can find it in the MindLab area of the Hub under the Assignments section: ‘Wheel of Life’. You may want to purely focus on your work roles within Wisdom11 but be aware that you are ignoring other areas such as your personal life, health and fitness etc.

Creating and Naming your Roles

When thinking about your roles it is important that the name you give it should be something that is exciting to you. The more exciting you make the role sound, the better you will feel when you think about it. For example, an ‘Inspirational Leader’ is more exciting than a ‘Manager’. A ‘Highly Effective Business Executive’ has much more power than a ‘Businessman’ or ‘Businesswoman’. The names you give your roles should have a strong meaning for you and inspire you to become whatever it is you want to be in that role. Some people find it easier to come up with an exciting name after they have written the compelling vision.

Your Compelling Vision

The compelling vision for each role is a vivid description of what it would be like if you were already fulfilling this role. It should be a rich representation of the role that really inspires you.

Start off thinking about yourself fulfilling this role in terms of “I am…. (name of role)”.. What are you doing / hearing / seeing? It may be useful to just note down a few words about the vision first and craft it into a meaningful and inspiring piece of text later.

Write your Compelling Vision for each role in the format “I am…”. The more work and time you put into getting a richly detailed representation of your Compelling Vision for the role, the easier it will be when you come to set the outcomes you want to achieve within this role.
